GREENSBORO - HondaJet broke ground this morning on their new factory at the Piedmont Triad International Airport that will manufacture small jet aircraft by 2010.
The production plant is somewhat of a coup for the Guilford County business community, since the facility will also be the world headquarters for HondaJet.
Honda says its prototype HondaJet was built in Greensboro and flight tests have been carried out in North Carolina over the last four years.
Greensboro Has Strong Aviation Base
Greensboro has a well-established aircraft support industry. Guilford Technical Community College (GTCC) has a well-established facility at the old Greensboro airport with an aircraft and powerplant instruction facility, as well as a pilot training school.
In addition, a large aircraft maintenance firm with its own jet maintenance hangars called TIMCO is located in Greensboro. There are also several cargo and charter airplane lines such as Piedmont Aviation that operate out of Greensboro. And in recent years, the Fed-Ex shipping giant has established a hub at the Greensboro airport.
Company Leadership In USA
Honda says that Michimasa Fujino, the chief engineer who has led development of HondaJet and spent the past 20 years in Honda's aviation activities with Honda's research and development arm, will be assigned as the president and CEO of the Honda Aircraft Company.
The company hopes to start its full operations in October and will employ around 200 people.
Taking Jet Orders This Fall
Honda Aircraft Company says it will begin taking sales orders for HondaJet this fall, with the goal of delivering the first mass production HondaJet in 2010.
The company has yet to receive FAA certification for its aircraft and will have to continue tests to receive approval before it can sell its aircraft to the public.
The company has also forged a new alliance with Piper Aircraft, which is an American company, and the two firms will collaborate in sales and service efforts.
Honda says its HondaJet features several innovations that help it achieve far better fuel efficiency, larger cabin and luggage space and higher cruise speed than conventional aircraft in its class. The company says it has been researching aviation for 20 years and holds patents regarding anew over the wing engine mount and composite construction of aircraft. ::
